If you’re a lover of natural remedies you might be familiar with eucalyptus oil’s reputation for colds and flu.

This Aussie medicine cabinet staple has been used to help ease congestion for centuries.

Its distinctive aromatic scent feels like home...conjuring comforting memories like a walk in the bush on a crisp winter’s morning.

But how DO you use eucalyptus oil for colds and flu? Just follow our comprehensive guide and you’ll be breathing easier in no time.

1. Steam Inhalation

Steam inhalation is one of the most effective ways to use eucalyptus oil for colds and flu. The warm, moist air is soothing to the sinuses, while eucalyptus oil is clearing and revitalising.

Here’s how:

1. Get a large, shallow bowl and fill with hot (not boiling) water. Bring the water to the bowl in a jug rather than carrying the bowl with water in it.

2. Add up to 20 drops of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil.

3. Sit on a chair, facing the bowl on a table. Put a towel over the back of your head, creating a tent to trap the steam. Inhale the aroma, breathing deeply through your nose for 5-10 minutes.

If the traditional ‘bowl and towel’ method isn’t for you, you can also try steam inhalation using a portable steam inhaler, such as this one. It's a great option for travel, work or when you’re on the go.

2. Chest Rub

Creating a DIY topical rub can be a great way to help alleviate cold symptoms. The body’s warmth will help to release the oil’s vapours to provide relief.

Here’s How:

1. Mix a few drops of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or olive oil.

(NOTE: For children 6 or over, use a ratio of 1 part eucalyptus to 10 parts carrier oil.)

2. Gently massage the mixture onto your chest and throat.

NOTE: This mixture can also be used on other parts of the body to help ease muscle aches and pains. Repeat every 4 hours as needed.

3. Eucalyptus Oil Shower

Ahhh.. there’s nothing like warm shower when you feel unwell! The heat relaxes muscles while the addition of soothing eucalyptus vapours helps to comfort and invigorate the senses.
